Most of you know that Lily Belle was born with Amniotic Band Syndrome. She was also born with a foot that turns outward, like the opposite of club foot. When we took her for her first Orthopedic appointment, her doctor was not entirely sure which need was more pressing: operating on the scar tissue band on her leg or beginning serial casting on her foot. He consulted with his colleagues and they decided the foot was of more pressing importance.
Something you need to know about our darling girl is that she becomes a wild, screaming banshee when doctors try to mess with any part of her body in any way. It can get super ugly super fast! This is what happened when her doc tried to x-ray her leg at the initial appointment. Based on that, we were fairly sure they were going to have to put her under anesthesia for each cast. That is 8-10 casts she would be knocked out for, not including the 2 surgeries needed on her band in the near future. We were all lined up for the first one, and just on the off chance that she would tolerate it, we decided to try it without knocking her out. W
We came to the appointment armed with Nutella & pretzel sticks & Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes… and she did GREAT! She was not thrilled that they were messing with her foot, but she barely cried at all. What an unexpected blessing!!
She was able to walk and play with the cast no problem, and she didn’t really get frustrated with it until the night before it was to be removed.
We weren’t sure how she would react to the saw they use to remove the cast when we went to our next appointment. We brought all kinds of distractions, including headphones in case the noise was scary. When they started sawing at the cast SHE LAUGHED! She thought it was great fun! She laid back, all nice and chill while they put on the second cast as well.
She has endured this cast just as well for the most part. We get a new one tomorrow, and have to have another x-ray. Let’s hope that goes better than before! I will leave you with this bit of loveliness from Lily Belle’s first Independence Day in America.
So glad things are going well for Lily Belle. She is adorable.
Thank you, Nettie Beth!
